Janet Kushimo

Program Director

My name is Oluwabukola Janet Kushimo, but I prefer to go by Janet. I am an African descendant, born in Nigeria, but came to Canada in 1993 at the age of 12yrs. I am happily married to a wonderful husband and blessed with three beautiful children. I am a devoted Christian, a delightful and dedicated worker in church as well. I am a compassionate, patient, humble and God fearing woman and desire in helping people, especially children, elderly and individual with special needs. I believe everyone was created for a purpose despite your disability. My motto is that in every disAbility, there is a potential Ability.

I lived in Toronto, Ontario for about eighteen years before relocating to Edmonton with my family for better future career. I graduated from University of Windsor with a Bachelor of Arts and Science in Sociology and my goal of career has always been geared towards working with children with special needs as well as communities who face multiple barriers such as poverty, domestic violence, teen pregnancies, discrimination and criminalization.

I have over ten years working background as a Developmental Support Worker and I have worked in various not-for-profit organizations supporting individuals with special needs both in residential and day program settings in Toronto, Ontario. I have also had the privilege to work in a retirement home for elderly in Windsor, Ontario. My areas of expertise at the time was in supporting adults with both developmental, dual-diagnosis, mental and behavioural challenges, in providing good quality care to enhance their quality of life as well as integrating them into the community and recreational activities. I also worked as a Program Coordinator in which I facilitated a dynamic group of seniors in creating and facilitating programs that enhance their health and quality of life.

Upon my arrival to Edmonton in 2012, I was fortunate to be accepted into Edmonton Catholic District School in which I worked as an Educational Assistant in various schools of all stages of development and grades, ranging from kindergarten to grade 6. With the passion and needs to grow within the district, I further my career as a TA-BT (Therapeutic Assistant-Behavioural Therapy) in 2017 till present. My areas of focus were working with a wide variety of students including those affected with ADD/ADHD, ASD/Asperger Syndrome, learning disabilities, global delay disabilities, and behavioural challenges. From this experience, I have been able to remain sensitive to students unique capabilities, provide individualized behavioural support, and collaborate with the lead teacher to cultivate a supportive learning environment, where each student is able to learn and succeed. Moreover, I am committed to helping children make the best use of the educational opportunities available to them. I am highly qualified in Early Child Development and have extensive experience in childcare as well as in supporting parents with their childcare needs.

However, with the passion for life-longing learning and with hope of starting my own childcare business in the near future, I decided to make another career shift this year heading towards that goal. After working as a TA-BT for four years, I finally decided to step down and pursue my dream as a Childcare Educator in a dayhome setting. I am currently taking my Early Childhood Educator (ECE) Level l to become a licensed family dayhome educator. As a highly compassionate committed educator, with a passion for life-long learning, I am confident that my education and field working experience have prepared me to take on this rewarding and exciting role of Childcare Educator.
